Streamlining parent-kindergarten communication

This project focused on creating a mobile app to improve communication between parents and preschools. The goal was to give parents quick access to key information about their child’s day, such as schedule, meals, attendance, and notifications.

Problem statement

Parents of preschool children aged 3-6 often feel disconnected from their child's daily life at kindergarten. Current forms of communication (verbal, paper-based, fragmented electronic) lead to information chaos, stress, and lack of transparency.

Main Goal

Designing a summary screen for the preschooler's day that allows parents quick access to the most important information without having to navigate through multiple tabs.

Key Functionalities

  • Child's daily schedule

  • Meal and menu information

  • Kindergarten notifications

  • Child's attendance status

  • Quick contact with the teacher

Discovery Phase

Besides designing the solution, my goal was also to present my analytical approach and show how I define problems before designing.

I created a FigJam space to collect all materials from the desk research phase, including references, insights, and initial ideas.

This is how I usually start each project. I prefer to spend a few hours on early analysis before moving into visual concepts.

Target Group

The task assumed: “Create a mobile app for parents of preschoolers.”

Therefore, I focused on parents of children aged 3–6 (based on Polish preschool standards).

However, I decided to break this group down into smaller profiles to design a more accurate and inclusive solution. I noticed that parents differ in how much time they spend using digital tools, which affects their needs and behavior in the app.

Posibilities

While analyzing my target group, I discovered several possibilities for improving the experience and meeting parents’ everyday needs. These insights helped define the direction of my design decisions.

Structure

To visualize the structure of the app, I created a simple information architecture diagram in FigJam. It helped me understand which elements should appear in the final design and how they connect.

Design Solutions

The final concept is a mobile app for parents of preschoolers that summarizes the child’s day in a clear and friendly way.

Each screen was designed to make daily contact between parents and kindergarten simpler, faster, and more transparent.

Reflections

This project was not my most ambitious, but it gave me a lot of joy. It was my first time designing something for parents, and during the research I realized how much technology has changed. When I was a child, my parents didn’t have access to the tools and possibilities we have today.

Even though the solution is simple, it helps satisfy parents’ curiosity and gives them a sense of control and security.
